Educational Note on the Revenue Stamps of Lombardy-Venetia

The fiscal stamps of Lombardy-Venetia (revenue stamps used for postage) were often used as emergency postage for ordinary or registered mail. The most common values used on letters or in used condition are c. 15 and c. 30; all other values are rare or extremely rare.

These stamps were issued in two printings, the earlier one using typographic printing and the later one using intaglio printing.

The secret to identifying the two types is the value "5"; by pure chance, these stamps exist in both types only from c. 15 onward, and all values have a "5" in the number. When this five has a drop-shaped (therefore oval) lower end, it belongs to the typographic printing; when it is "round", it belongs to the intaglio printing.

Another feature of these examples is the gum; for the most part, these stamps are found in mint condition without gum, and that price is what the catalog value refers to; if they are found mint with original gum, then that value must be tripled to obtain the actual catalog value of the item.
